Lymphedema is a medical condition characterized by excessive swelling in the arms or legs. It's typically the result of a blockage in the lymph nodes where fluid flows through the body. The blockage can cause fluid to collect in areas under the skin and can cause a variety of symptoms including swelling, pain, skin discoloration and more. It is a common side effect of cancer treatment. Lymphedema affects 1 out of every 100,000 people in the U.S.

If you’re one of the many who have this condition, you can learn more below about how your lymphedema can be treated with physical therapy. Many people don’t think of physical therapy as a treatment for lymphedema. However, PT can alleviate several of the symptoms associated with lymphedema and improve a person’s quality of life.

What are the symptoms of lymphedema?

There are many symptoms of lymphedema. It’s important that you read through each one to determine if you or your loved one is showing signs of lymphedema. Suppose you recognize one or more of the symptoms as something you’re experiencing. In that case, it’s important to contact a medical professional, like a licensed physical therapist, who can provide you with treatment. Getting the proper care for this condition can mean the return to daily activities, like eating, walking and bathing.

  • Swelling in an area where the lymph nodes are — One sign of lymphedema is swelling in parts of the body where lymph nodes are located. These include the chest, shoulders, legs, armpits, neck, groin and jaw, just to name a few. It’s estimated that each person has around 800 lymph nodes throughout their body.

  • Reduced movement in joints around the affected lymph nodes — In areas where the lymph nodes have become damaged or blocked, a person may also experience limited mobility in the joints around those nodes.

  • Difficulty fitting into your normal attire — Another symptom of lymphedema is having trouble fitting into clothes or putting on jewelry. You may not have gained any weight but still have difficulty putting on your pants, shirts, rings and other types of clothing due to swelling.

  • Discomfort or new sensations around affected areas — People with lymphedema also often experience new, uncomfortable sensations around the affected areas. For example, aching, numbness and heaviness are all types of sensations that people with lymphedema often experience.

  • Changes in skin texture — One more example of lymphedema symptoms is skin texture and color changes. Lymphedema can make a person’s skin hard and rough and can change color to bright pink or red. Some people also feel like their skin becomes hotter than normal with this condition.

How can physical therapy help with the symptoms of lymphedema?

Physical therapy is an effective treatment method for alleviating many of the symptoms of this condition. PT can help lymphedema patients in the following ways:

  • Improve range of motion — One of the top benefits of physical therapy for lymphedema patients is that it can help improve range of motion in the affected limbs. When the swelling in the limbs prevents full range of motion, therapists can use exercises, compression sleeves and manual techniques to improve mobility.

  • Improve muscle strength — Building strength in the muscles can reduce the symptoms of lymphedema and can also prevent flare-ups from occurring in the future. Strength training is known to encourage lymph fluid drainage.

  • Relieve some of the swelling — During physical therapy sessions, therapists may use techniques like strength training, elevation, compression garments and manual manipulation to decrease the blockage of the lymph fluid and reduce swelling.
