The Gastrocnemius muscle is the more superficial of the two muscles. It crosses the knee joint and attaches up to the bottom of the femur and inserts into the top part of your heel.

The Soleus muscle sits underneath the gastrocnemius and up against the tibia. It attaches below the knee joint into the tibia and inserts into the top of our heel.
