How to mentally prepare for knee replacement surgery

1 minute, 49 seconds

Knee replacement surgery is a big deal. It's considered one of the most common orthopedic surgical procedures in the U.S. and is projected to become even more prevalent. The most common reason for knee replacement surgery is for knee pain relief from osteoarthritis.

So, you've scheduled your knee replacement surgery date, but what can you do in the meantime to mentally prepare?

What can you do to mentally prepare for knee replacement surgery?

  • Keep informed ” It may help for you to research the process of the actual surgical operation on your knee, ways to physically prepare for surgery, what recovery looks like, and anything else you can think of. For some, knee surgery can become less intimidating if you head into it knowing what to expect.
  • Speak with others ” One good way to ease your mind before knee replacement surgery is to speak with others who have undergone this surgery. You could join a Facebook group or something similar to find people who have gone through it and could potentially offer reassurance or advice.
  • Meet with a physical therapist ” Meeting with a physical therapist can help you mentally prepare for your knee replacement surgery in a couple of ways. First, they can walk you through what to expect post-op, they can work with you to develop a personalized recovery plan, and they can even provide pre-surgical physical therapy sessions to build strength around your knee for better recovery after surgery. Going to physical therapy before and after surgery is a great idea for a number of reasons, but to learn about them all you'll just have to contact a therapist near you!
