1 minute, 41 seconds

According to estimates from researchers, the prevalence of low back pain (LBP) for adults in the U.S. is approximately 8%. This equates to about 16 million adults in the U.S. dealing with conditions. Lower back pain is common among the general population. For those who play sports or are physically active, the rate of low back pain prevalence can range anywhere from 10% to 15% in any given year. Pain in the lower back can be disruptive for anyone. This is especially true for athletes who often need to move more often than nonathletes. For athletes, there are a few different types of lower back pain problems that they're particularly more likely to develop in the future. Keep reading below to find out more.

What are some of the lower back problems that athletes are more at risk of developing in the future?

  • Spondylosis ” This condition, which is a term for a stress fracture, is a fairly common condition among athletes. It most often occurs in younger athletes but can definitely show up as a future back problem for physically active adults.
  • Herniated disc ” Herniated discs are another common condition among athletes. This condition often results because athletes place the discs in their vertebrae under continued, vigorous stress. This continued stress can ultimately cause discs to become herniated.
  • Muscle strain ” Muscle strain in athletes is common mostly due to overuse of the muscle. It can occur when lifting heavy weights or neglecting to stretch muscles before physical activity.
